Honoring Our Connection to the Peaks
At Monti Trentini, the mountains are more than just our foundation—they are our identity. The name “Monti Trentini” actually translates to “Trentino’s Mountains,” paying homage to the breathtaking peaks of our home region in northern Italy. These mountains have shaped our history, inspired our cheesemaking traditions, and are deeply connected to the artisanal quality of our products.
Nearly 70% of the farms we collaborate with are located in the breathtaking mountainous region of Trentino and Veneto, and their work is critical not only to our products but also to the preservation of the environment and alpine heritage. Farming in the mountains is no easy task. It demands resilience and skills. Yet, this hard work pays off in ways that go far beyond producing high-quality milk. Mountain farming protects biodiversity, preserves woods and pastures, and supports local ecosystems. By partnering with small farms in the mountains, Monti Trentini contributes to safeguard these stunning natural landscapes while ensuring that our cheeses are infused with the unique characteristics of the alpine territory.
One of the most remarkable aspects of mountain farming is the tradition of bringing cows to the high meadows during the summer months, a practice called “Alpeggio”. This practice is not only better for the environment but also greatly enhances the well-being of the animals. In these lush alpine pastures, cows are free to roam and graze, choosing from an abundant variety of herbs and flowers. The Alpeggio not only improves the cows’ health and happiness but also imparts distinct, aromatic notes to the milk, which are reflected in every bite of Monti Trentini cheese.
The relationship between mountain farming and cheesemaking is a beautiful cycle of sustainability and tradition. By encouraging farming in the mountains, we help preserve these pristine environments for future generations while supporting small, local communities whose livelihoods are deeply connected to the land. Monti Trentini is proud to work closely with mountain farms who shares our commitment to ethical and sustainable practices.
This World Mountain Day, we take a moment to celebrate the farmers who work in the mountains, braving the steep terrain and unpredictable weather to bring us the finest milk. Their dedication ensures that every wheel of Monti Trentini cheese tells the story of the mountains—their beauty, their challenges, and their immense value.
Happy World Mountain Day! Let’s raise a toast (and a piece of cheese) to the mountains, the farmers, and the traditions that bring us closer to nature.
